But You Don’t Look Sick!
A 12-page illustrated book documenting the stories and statements of university students living with chronic invisible illness. Current research suggests that students with “invisible” chronic illnesses such as lupus, fibromyalgia, etc. often report feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, frustration, and accusations of laziness by staff and peers. My goal in creating this book was to bring comfort to these students living with chronic invisible illness while also educating others.
“But You Don’t Look Sick” contains material from over 20 interviews with chronically ill students, compiled and illustrated by Mary Metzger. Self published.
In 2019, “But You Don’t Look Sick!” received a Top Talent award from the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.
